it's movies like this that will take a gammer back to the late 1980's when the original NES was the hottest and newest thing on th market. A little kid named Mikey, who was locked in a mental institution, escapes in an attempt to run back home. But with his parents chasing after him, his brother and his girlfriend team up to prevent two guys attempting to capture Mikey for a large cash reward. During the movie, Mikey doesn't talk much, but has an unusal talent for beating video games. At first he didn't have anything much. But while on the run, the kids use Mikey's gaming talents ot win a few cash bets that go out of hand, when the guys they beat catch up with them and beat them up. It was later in the movie that they meat up with a kid named Lucas, who is also a videogame champion and has all 89 NES games, and gives them a demonstration of his top gaming skills with his new Powerglove. He also mentions of a videogame armegadon in California for a chance to win big cash prizes.
Sure Mikey got his first big disappointment from his first loss, but his friends coach him on and encourage him to keep going. The chase continues as the hunt for Mikey continues, but competition is there when another guy does everythig to stop him as he wanted the money too. They journey to California is funded in a Casino as Koruey's friend who drives a huge truck gives them a lift as well as a few hundred bucks from a streak of luck in a gambling casino. While in the Casino, they plan to enter Mikey in the competition and train him in every possible arcade videogame in the area. It made me cry, as the games that were featured. On the side of one of the arcade cabinets in an arcade was the name "Romstar", I betcha that might've been Bubble Bobble as originally is was licensed to release from Japan to the US from Romstar.
Toward the end, the chase comes to Universal Studios where the videogame championships occur, as the two parents attempt to chase down the kids and Mikey all thoughout the park. The videogame armegadon was about to start and Mikey was missing. It looked bad, but an esacape behind the scenes and down an elevator took Mikey and the kids directly to the contest. It was all exciting, even when the guy announed that the contestants will play a game that they've never, ever played before.
"Super Mario Bros 3." This was 1989 when it was brand new. Man does that game ever bring back memories. They had 10 minutes to score as high as they could, and it seemed like Lucas was going to win, but Mikey found the secret warp zone and warped to Giantland and scored big time. The final seconds came down to a close and the competition was fierce and everyone worked up a sweat. Till by the end of the round, Mikey won after getting the star card at the end of the level. 81,000 points.
this was a fun and exciting movie, as gamers who remember the NES can go back to when it was brand new and still the hottest game system around.
